Top 3 Acne Treatments
90% of teenagers have acne. If acne is left untreated, many of these teenagers have acne even into adulthood. And, with so many junk acne products out there, it's often difficult to find acne treatments that work. This website analyzes the best acne treatments for both adults and teenagers currently on the market. Each acne treatment was reviewed based on three standards:
- Exposed
- ClearPores
- Zenmed
What is Exposed?
Exposed is a 3-step acne battling kit that utilizes the best of science and nature to bring you an effective acne treating cream. This three-step system consists of a facial cleanser, clearing tonic, and acne treatment serum. Developed through research by dermatologists, cosmetologists, naturopaths and chemists, the Exposed acne treatment is a unique and revolutionary approach to battling acne from its roots. Exposed also proactively seeks out new pimples and eliminates them before they ever have the chance to form.
The Exposed acne system specifically helps to clear existing acne, prevent new acne formation, even skin tone, and reduce the appearance of existing scars (also prevents future scarring).
What We Liked About Exposed
The Exposed acne system combines all the top ingredients from the best sources to create an acne treatment that effectively combats and eliminates acne before it ever forms. What distinguishes Exposed from other brands is its use of both scientific and natural additives that work concurrently to unclog pores and fight acne bacteria. This kit also fights to restore skin tone and reduce redness from left over acne.
We also liked the excellent customer service Exposed acne provided. Their website is very easy to use and you can track all your orders on their website. Also, they have a 1-year guarantee for their product. This really shows that the company cares about treating your acne.
Success Rates
The Exposed acne system has a good success rate with many success stories and testimonials, outside of the testimonials on the Exposed website. The reason Exposed has high success rates is because of its attack on all the causes of acne: overproduction of sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells. Each one of the steps in the exposed skin care kit specifically attacks each one of these factors, quickly reducing and elminating acne within a months time.
Conclusion about Exposed
The Exposed acne system is definitely a good one to try out. Unlike Proactiv and other popular acne treatments, Exposed doesn't rely solely on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid working. Exposed acne introduces many other effective acne fighting ingredients that work very well to quickly treat and prevent any further inflammation from occuring. There are no pills you have to intake, so you shouldn't have to worry about potential side-effects. Compared to other acne treatments currently on the market, Exposed acne comes in as our #1 for 2008.

Green Tea for Weight Loss
Green tea is very effective in natural weight loss. Besides loosing weight, it also has several other health benefits. Green tea contains a number of things that are reported to be very healthful for you. Among these are:
Tannins, phenols, polyphenols, and flavanoid compounds, the amino acid theanine, and catechins of which EGCG seems to be the most beneficial.
Green tea increases fat metabolism which means the rate at which you burn calories and the body's ability to burn fat increases. The studies seem to point to a connection between the caffeine in green tea and the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which causes a boost in noradrenaline. Noradrenaline helps your body boost your metabolism and suppress your appetite.
Green Tea Benefits in Weight Loss
• Green tea increases your metabolism: Studies shows that green tea extract increases the metabolic rate by 4%. These effects are probably due to the high concentrations of catechin polyphenols found in green tea. These work to help intensify levels of fat oxidation and thermogenesis (the rate at which your body burns calories).
• Green tea inhibits fat absorption and helps glucose regulation: Reports says that the catechins in green tea help to inhibit the movement of glucose into fat cells. Green tea may also act as al glucose regulator. It helps to slow the rise in blood sugar after a meal. This prevents high insulin spikes (lots of insulin promotes fat storage) and the subsequent fat storage.
• 3 – 5 cups of green tea per day is effective in noticeable weight loss. Doing this can help you burn an extra 70 calories per day which amounts to 7 pounds per year.
Other Benefits of Green Tea on Health
• It helps in protecting skin from ultraviolet radiation.
• It helps in increasing normal life span.
• It also protect against a number of different cancers.
• It Increases antioxidant levels in the body.

Benefits of walking
Walking and Exercise Add Healthy Years to Life
Walking is the best exercise everyone can do anywhere in this world and the best part is you donot need any equipments to do this exercise. If you want to live healthier longer, start now with daily walking or exercise. A study in the "Archives of Internal Medicine" showed that exercise levels directly related to years lived without cardiovascular disease.
30 Minutes of Walking a Day Adds 1.3 Healthy Years
A moderate level of physical activity, such as walking 30 minutes a day, lengthened life by 1.3 years and added 1.1 more years without cardiovascular disease, compared with those with low activity levels. Those who chose a high physical activity level gained 3.7 years of life and added 3.3 more years without cardiovascular disease.
Invest a Little Time for a Better Future
An editorial in the "Washington Post" did the math - invest 30 minutes of walking a day and you'll spend 49 days of the next 12 years of your life walking to gain 1.3 healthy years. That's a great payoff, considering that it is also likely the walking will help you keep off fat and improve your mood.
Spend Time in Exercise or Spend Later Battling Disease
If you wait until you develop a health problem, you will be spending more than 30 minutes a day on drugs, surgery and recovery, treatments, getting the medical bills paid, going to appointments, and making your final arrangements. Instead, spend those 30 minutes a day beforehand in an exercise you enjoy. If walking doesn't work for you, try biking or swimming. If walking is too mild, try running.
Even One More Healthy Year is of Great Value
If you hate exercise, imagine how much more you will hate surgery and all of the bottles of expensive pills you must take. Giving yourself an extra healthy year, or two, or three is well worth it.

However, there are a lot of misconceptions about it. Many people think that this is a diet that consists of just shakes and maybe some bars. There are many more than these two foods on the menu. There are well over 70, and since you need to eat six times per day, you will likely eventually come to appreciate this.
If you were to just limit yourself to liquids and an occasional bar, you would likely become bored and this would not be so healthy any way. Although five of your six meals are provided for you by the company, they do want for you to prepare one fresh meal each day to ensure that you are getting the nutrients that come from fresh foods. Of the six meals, only one each day should consists of the bars since they contain higher amounts of calories and carbohydrates. They really try to limit each meal to around 100 calories each and under 12 grams of carbs.

Anger
Anger is an emotion. The physical effects of anger include increased heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Anger can be caused by both external and internal events. You could be angry at a specific person or event (a traffic jam, a canceled flight), or your anger could be caused by worrying or brooding about your personal problems. Memories of traumatic or enraging events can also trigger angry feelings.
Expressing Anger
The instinctive, natural way to express anger is to respond aggressively. Anger is a natural, adaptive response to threats; it inspires powerful, often aggressive, feelings and behaviors, which allow us to fight and to defend ourselves when we are attacked. A certain amount of anger, therefore, is necessary to our survival.
On the other hand, we can't physically lash out at every person or object that irritates or annoys us; laws, social norms, and common sense place limits on how far our anger can take us.
People use a variety of both conscious and unconscious processes to deal with their angry feelings. The three main approaches are expressing, suppressing, and calming. Expressing your angry feelings in an assertive—not aggressive—manner is the healthiest way to express anger. To do this, you have to learn how to make clear what your needs are, and how to get them met, without hurting others. Being assertive doesn't mean being pushy or demanding; it means being respectful of yourself and others.
Anger can be suppressed, and then converted or redirected. This happens when you hold in your anger, stop thinking about it, and focus on something positive. The aim is to inhibit or suppress your anger and convert it into more constructive behavior. The danger in this type of response is that if it isn't allowed outward expression, your anger can turn inward—on yourself. Anger turned inward may cause hypertension, high blood pressure, or depression.
Unexpressed anger can create other problems. It can lead to pathological expressions of anger, such as passive-aggressive behavior (getting back at people indirectly, without telling them why, rather than confronting them head-on) or a personality that seems perpetually cynical and hostile. People who are constantly putting others down, criticizing everything, and making cynical comments haven't learned how to constructively express their anger. Not surprisingly, they aren't likely to have many successful relationships.
Finally, you can calm down inside. This means not just controlling your outward behavior, but also controlling your internal responses, taking steps to lower your heart rate, calm yourself down, and let the feelings subside.
As Dr. Spielberger notes, "when none of these three techniques work, that's when someone—or something—is going to get hurt."
Anger Management
The goal of anger management is to reduce both your emotional feelings and the physiological arousal that anger causes. You can't get rid of, or avoid, the things or the people that enrage you, nor can you change them, but you can learn to control your reactions.
Are You Too Angry?
There are psychological tests that measure the intensity of angry feelings, how prone to anger you are, and how well you handle it. But chances are good that if you do have a problem with anger, you already know it. If you find yourself acting in ways that seem out of control and frightening, you might need help finding better ways to deal with this emotion.
Strategies To Keep Anger At Bay
Relaxation
Simple relaxation tools, such as deep breathing and relaxing imagery, can help calm down angry feelings. There are books and courses that can teach you relaxation techniques, and once you learn the techniques, you can call upon them in any situation. If you are involved in a relationship where both partners are hot-tempered, it might be a good idea for both of you to learn these techniques.
Some simple steps you can try:
Breathe deeply, from your diaphragm; breathing from your chest won't relax you. Picture your breath coming up from your "gut."
Slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as "relax," "take it easy." Repeat it to yourself while breathing deeply.
Use imagery; visualize a relaxing experience, from either your memory or your imagination.
Nonstrenuous, slow yoga-like exercises can relax your muscles and make you feel much calmer.
Practice these techniques daily. Learn to use them automatically when you're in a tense situation.

People should earnestly think in terms of reducing their weight around the neck. The following lists can be enumerated in a successful manner without any difficulty. First of all you should undertake proper exercise which can magnificently shape up your appearance from the fat conditions around the neck. These programs should plan the toning up of exercises which should be composed of hardening as well as improvising the strength as well as weight training regimen.
Since an excess weight is caused, physical exercises should be supplemented with a proper and meticulous as well as nutritious diet. Nutritionists advise people confronted with obesity for intake of foods with rich fiber content to make them feel with satisfied appetite even with small amounts of intake. High calorie food, Trans fat as well as food impregnated with salt should be kept away. Under such conditions a lot of intake of water is advisable.
Another method which is recommended in the form of cosmetic surgery is one of the most adroit methods for reduction of the look of fat in a pleasant manner. These may not be advisable for administration on everybody but, this is the most efficient methodology for reduction of fat under such conditions. There is another condition known as neck lift which can be administered on people who experience sagging skin from their neck area. This is medically known as platysmaplasty. Surgeons would utilize the process of incisions directly at the back of the ear to get rid of by hiding the look of scars. This medical process enhances the outlook of the jaw line.
Another process is known as neck lift liposuction. This process is designed for the removal of deposits of fat in the neck area where the magic of exercise as well as diet does not give results. Most of the concentrated areas are sub-mental regions, jowl, and cheek.
Surgical processes are mostly resorted to as the last step. Only after the other methodologies of exercising and dieting have been resorted to the method of surgical process should be considered if all the other methods have failed to yield research.
Proper advice from dermatologists should be taken for applying the right brand of creams which are important from the point of view of successful treatment. This as clear-cut strategy should be adopted to the effect that if medications fail, surgery should be resorted to.

benefits of banana
Bananas are originally from Malaysia. They were then brought to India around the 6th century. By 200 A.D., there were banana plantations set up in southern China. Here they were considered to be exotic fruits. It is said that when Alexander the Great visited India during his campaign in 327 A.D., he savoured bananas and took them to the western world.
This fruit comes in yellow, green, and red varieties and has been proven to have a number of medicinal benefits.
Bananas are a great food for all round health benefits, for the average person, dieter or even athletes bananas may provide greater benefits than most fruits. The combination of carbohydrates and B vitamins present in a banana helps provide an energy boost which makes them great to eat 30 minutes before a workout, or even at breakfast to help boost energy at the start of every day.

Higher levels of potassium in the body can reduce the possibility of a stroke. The fact that bananas are high in potassium and low in salt makes them ideal for people who are suffering from blood pressure problems and have to watch their salt intake.
Research also states that potassium can help in improving a person's alertness. However, it should be noted that excessive quantities of potassium cause decreased heart muscle activity. A medium-size banana contains at least 450 mg of potassium
Vital Vitamins and Minerals
Bananas pack their share of vitamins. Large-size bananas have high amounts of vitamin A in them. Vitamin A is essential for the development of specialised tissue in the eyes. It is also important for the growth of the skin and soft skeletal tissue. Vitamin B is also present in the form of Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, and Folic acid. Cerebral haemorrhage
A cerebral hemorrhage is a subtype of intracranial hemorrhage that occurs within the brain tissue itself. Intracerebral hemorrhage can be caused by brain trauma, or it can occur spontaneously in hemorrhagic stroke. Non-traumatic intracerebral haemorrhage is a spontaneous bleeding into the brain tissue.
A cerebral hemorrhage is an intra-axial hemorrhage; that is, it occurs within the brain tissue rather than outside of it.
Causes
CT scan showing hemorrhage in the posterior fossa
Intracerebral bleeds are the second most common cause of stroke, accounting for 30–60% of hospital admissions for stroke. High blood pressure raises the risk of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage by two to six times. More common in adults than in children, intraparenchymal bleeds due to trauma are usually due to penetrating head trauma, but can also be due to depressed skull fractures, acceleration-deceleration trauma, rupture of an aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation (AVM), and bleeding within a tumor. A very small proportion is due to cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.
Symptoms
Patients with intraparenchymal bleeds have symptoms that correspond to the functions controlled by the area of the brain that is damaged by the bleed. Other symptoms include those that indicate a rise in intracranial pressure due to a large mass putting pressure on the brain. Intracerebral hemorrhages are often misdiagnosed as Subarachnoid hemorrhages due to the similarity in symptoms and signs.
Diagnosis
Spontaneous ICH with hydrocephalus on CT scan
Intraparenchymal hemorrhage can be recognized on CT scans because blood appears brighter than other tissue and is separated from the inner table of the skull by brain tissue. The tissue surrounding a bleed is often less dense than the rest of the brain due to edema, and therefore shows up lighter on the CT scan.
Treatment
Treatment depends substantially of the type of ICH. Rapid CT scan and other diagnostic measures are used to choose proper treatment, which may include both medication and surgery
Surgery
Surgery is required if the hematoma is greater than 3 cm, if there is a structural vascular lesion or lobar hemorrhage in a young patient.
A catheter may be passed into the brain vasculature to close off or dilate blood vessels, avoiding rather invasive surgical procedures.
Aspiration by stereotactic surgery or endoscopic drainage may be used in basal ganglia hemorrhages, although successful reports are limited.

BENEFITS OF HONEY
This wonderfully rich golden liquid is the miraculous product of honey bees and a naturally delicious alternative to white sugar. The fascinating process of making honey begins when the bees feast on flowers, collecting the flower nectar in their mouths. This nectar then mixes with special enzymes in the bees' saliva, an alchemical process that turns it into honey. The bees carry the honey back to the hive where they deposit it into the cells of the hive's walls. The fluttering of their wings provides the necessary ventilation to reduce the moisture's content making it ready for consumption.
In addition to its reputation as Nature's nutritive sweetener, research also indicates that honey's unique composition makes it useful as an antimicrobial agent and antioxidant.
Listed below are some common problems and ailments which can easily be cured and avoided from the use of Honey:
Skin
Honey is extremely nourishing for the skin when used as face pack and helps in rejuvenating the skin leading to the elimination of fine wrinkles.
It is a good moisturiser.
Honey has considerable Laxative effect on the human digestion system which in turn helps in reducing skin problem ie (pimples) and other problems associated with constipation, which become revealed on the skin.
Antibacterial and antifungal properties
Honey contains many minerals and vitamins beneficial to man. However, one of the most important properties seems to be its antibiotic action.
Honey has been shown to be superior to certain conventional antibiotics in treating some infections.
This bactericide (bacteria-killing) property of honey is named "the inhibition effect". Experiments conducted on honey show that its bactericide properties increase twofold when diluted with water. It is very interesting to note that newly born bees in the colony are nourished with diluted honey by the bees responsible for their supervision - as if they know this feature of the honey.
Healing wounds & grazes
Honey is of value in treating burns, infected surgical wounds and ulcers. Honey is very viscous, enabling it to absorb water from surrounding inflamed tissue. For example, a study in West Africa showed that skin grafting, surgical debridement and even amputation were avoided when local application of honey to wound promoted healing, whereas conventional treatment failed.
For such wounds or Grazes, cover the wound with honey and a bandage.
Diarrhoea
At a concentration of 40%, honey has a bactericidal effect on various gut bacteria known to cause diarrhoea and dysentery
Allergies
Raw honey is an excellent treatment for 90% of all allergies.
Teeth
Although Honey is sweet, it helps to maintain and protect teeth! Its anti-microbial activity has been tested on several species of dental plaque bacteria. A study shows that honey has been proven to sharply reduce acid production, thus killing the bacteria responsible for dental caries, and blocking the growth of oral bacteria.
Stomach Ache
Take 1 teaspoon of honey, juice of ½ a lemon with a hot glass of water first thing in the morning.
Colds and coughs
Honey is remedial in cases of persistent coughs and sore throat. The strong antibiotic properties it contains coats the throat and reduces throat irritation.
Mix 6 oz. liquid honey, 2 oz. glycerin with juice of 2 lemons. Bottle and cork firmly. Use as required.
For Blocked noses, Place a dessert spoon of honey in a basin of hot water and inhale fumes after covering your head with a towel over the basin.
For Sore throats, Let 1 teaspoon of honey melt in the back of the mouth and trickle down the throat. Eases inflamed raw tissues.
Uneasiness felt in the mouth & throat due to infection can be relieved immediately with honey, so there is extensive scope for honey in cough mixtures & expectorants.
Honey used for children helps inflammatory throat conditions as it both purifies blood.
Digestion
Because sugar molecules in honey can convert into other sugars (e.g. fructose to glucose), honey is easily digested by the most sensitive stomachs, despite its high acid content. It helps kidneys and intestines to function better. Hence honey is beneficial for maintaining a healthy digestive system as well as combating illnesses such as constipation.
For poor digestion, Mix 1:1 honey with apple cider vinegar and dilute to taste with water.
For patients suffering with various maladies of stomach who consume 10 grams of honey on an empty stomach in the morning & not eat anything thereafter for about 1 hour, will start feeling relief from the disorders within a few days.
Weight control
Honey has a low calorie content. Honey, when it is compared with the same amount of sugar, it gives 40% less calories to the body. Although it gives great energy to the body, it does not add weight.
Rapidly diffuses through the blood
When accompanied by mild water, honey diffuses into the bloodstream in 7 minutes. Its free sugar molecules make the brain function better since the brain is the largest consumer of sugar.
Conjunctivitis (pus in the eye)
Honey dissolved in equal quantity of warm water. Apply, when cooled, as lotion or eye bath.
Blood
Honey provides an important part of the energy needed by the body for blood formation. In addition, it helps in cleansing the blood. It has some positive effects in regulating and facilitating blood circulation. It also functions as a protection against capillary problems and arteriosclerosis.
The Heart
British researchers have discovered that honey slows the oxidation of 'bad' IDL cholesterol, which is responsible for causing arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. So Honey can fight against Colesterol. And the darker the honey, the better.
Pure honey taken with food daily (instead of white sugar) relieves complains of cholesterol.
This is beneficial for those of Old age, sufferers of Heart-disease, Diabetes, High-blood Pressure, Stroke, and others.
Appetite
Honey improves appetite in children suffering from conditions of appetite loss.

Top 10 weight lose exercise
Just as eating healthy, it’s important to do some exercise as well. The best exercises will contain a cardio aspect and a toning aspect, as this will allow you to see the results fastest.
Here are my top 10 weight loss exercises, and how many calories they burn!
1. step aerobics:
Calories Burnt: 800 cal/hr
This mainly targets your legs, hips and bum, which are often the areas that women most want to tone. Doing an hour a day, split into two half an hour sessions, will ensure that you see results within 2 weeks.
Another very similar exercise is bench presses, which go very well in sets with step aerobics. I found it really hard to do them to start with, so make sure you’re doing them right or you’ll see no results!
2. Bicycling:
This is my favorite calorie burner, because it’s so easy to do. How about riding while watching the TV? I find that cycling through Eastenders keeps me distracted, but working hard.
Doing lengths up and down the pool for an hour will burn off 800 calories, and also tone almost all of your body. Stay motivated by giving yourself half an hour extra to make use of the Jacuzzi when you’ve finished!
4. Racquetball:
Calories Burnt: 800 cals/hr
The side to side running involved in this is a great cardio workout, and will also help to tone your thighs and legs. I also find this to be much more sociable, which keeps me working out for longer and stops me skiving my gym sessions!
5. Elliptical Burner:
Calories Burnt: 600 cals/hr
This is brilliant cardio, and also helps to build strong muscles, as well as toning the stomach. I personally find Elliptical Burner really boring, so I split my session into ten minute bursts and do them throughout the day, and I find that listening to some upbeat music really helps as well.
Rowing is a brilliant way to tone your arms, and is also very good fun. Get involved with the local rowing club and you’ll get to try it for free, or simply use the rowing machine at the gym. As well as building arm muscle, you’ll also burn calories and get an incredible workout.
The easiest exercise, brisk walking is a great cardio workout and will also help to tone legs, stomach and hips. Sprinting, walking across hills or walking uphill will add to the amount of calories burnt, and walking tends to be very easy to fit into daily life. Just walking to the train station has made me so much fitter, and it really wakes me up going for a brisk walk in the morning.
This targets all over your body, and is an excellent work out. I frequently put a music channel on and dance around, as well as burning calories I also find that it’s a great stress reliever! Just make sure you stay active, and try and keep going for at least an hour!
While these come under a lot of different headings, some exercise DVDs do actually help you to lose weight and tone up. Find a high energy one, and try and do it once a day. As well as burning calories and toning up, you’ll also feel much fitter. My personal favourite is “Pump It Up”, because the music keeps me motivated!
This one may be slightly harder to arrange, but going horse riding once a week is one of the best ways to stay fit, healthy and enjoy nature. The view from up there is so amazing, you won’t notice that your toning your bum, abs and thighs, and burning calories while your at it! You’d be surprised at how cheap it can be to arrange a session once a weekend, and if your feeling extra fit you could even cycle to the stables.

Stretch marks are one of the most unwanted results of pregnancy, rapid weight loss or weight gain for men and women. There are millions of individuals who have developed stretch marks. Most of these people are looking for ways to reduce stretch marks on their bodies.

3. Eat foods rich in vitamins A, C and E or take supplements in addition to your diet. However, pregnant women should avoid taking more than 25,000 IU of vitamin A.
4. To reduce stretch marks, maintaining your skin elasticity by moisturizing it with a stretch mark cream. Creams that are specially formulated for reducing stretch marks not only heel marks but also prevent skin from drying.
5. Keep yourself hydrated. Drink 8-10 glasses of water per day, because drinking sufficient amount of water ensures your body and tissues are properly hydrated. It also removes toxins from your body.
6. Eat foods high in essential fatty acids (such as fish), protein, citrus foods, nuts and vegetables. This will make your skin tighter, softer, and healthier everyday.
7. Aloe vera is a commonly used herbal plant to reduce stretch marks. Many commercial blends made into a stretch mark cream to reduce stretch marks include this herb. Aloe Vera contains plant collagen and is able to penetrate to the dermal layer and repair the damage that has caused the stretch marks.
8. Skin exfoliation can help in reducing stretch marks. All you need is an exfoliation cream. Apply this cream on the areas with stretch marks. This will help strip the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin so that new skin can grow without having the appearance of scars anymore.
However, these stretch marks might not be totally removed because only the surface of the problem has been solved. If you want a treatment that can reach the root of the trouble then stretch mark creams and oils can help you with this..

Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that causes skin cells to grow too quickly. In psoriasis, patches of red, thickened skin with silvery scales develop, usually on the elbows, knees, scalp, and trunk. These areas can be itchy and painful. The areas usually involved are the elbows, knees, and the skin behind the ears, the trunk, and the scalp. The disease may also affect the underarms and genital areas.
Nails may become rough and pitted, and less commonly, a form of arthritis develops called psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis can be a persistent problem, and tends to run in families. Stress, infections such as a sore throat, reaction to certain drugs, and skin injuries may trigger an attack or make it worse.
Symptoms of Psoriasis
Following are the major psoriasis symptoms:
1. Red and irritated skin with bright silvery scales
2. Sometimes accompanied with slight itching
Causes of Psoriasis
Following are the major psoriasis causes:
1. Due to abnormality in the mechanism in which the skin grows and replaces itself

Why does a women"s heart skip a beat?
Empowerment at the price of a healthy heart? More Indian women than ever before are joining the workforce, their hearts are skipping more than just a beat and it’s not always because of a man. It’s part of the global picture, which has women accounting for 15-20% of heart disease.
Dr Ashok Seth, chairman of Delhi’s Escorts Hospital, says, modern women face more stress than their mothers and grandmothers. “More of them are coping with high-pressure jobs, and also looking after their homes, giving them heart disease 10 years earlier.” Seth warns women to “pay more attention to themselves” because heart disease is likely to be the number one killer within five years.
Doctors agree heart disease afflicts women at least a decade before they could expect it. Earlier, it would strike women over 60, but now, it's hitting them at 50, says Dr Praveen Chandra, director of Cardiac Cath Lab of Delhi’s Max Hospital.
Stress is often compounded by neglect. Dr Kushagra Kataria, CEO and chief cardiothoracic surgeon of Gurgaon’s Artemis Hospital says it is very noticeable “that when women come in with their sick husbands, they wait till they have get treated first and then tell me they too have the same symptoms.” Perhaps the best advice for Indian men on World Heart Day should be ‘Have a heart’ and look after your women.
Do they face the same risks? Women initially have the advantage because the female hormone, estrogen, protects the heart. But menopausal women have declining estrogen levels and the risk equals that of men, say cardiologists. Women who pop the pill are more at risk because oral contraceptives are thought to increase the risk of blood clots, says Chandra.
The changing mindset of the Indian woman means the rise of what Kataria calls “the Type A” personality (aggressive, ambitious, impatient), often seen in men. Type As are more prone to heart disease.
Most scary is women exhibiting atypical symptoms of an attack. Seth says “women may not always show typical angina symptoms, but could just suffer from breathlessness.” He adds this “is often dismissed as lack of fitness. Their treadmill exercise test too shows greater negative results.”
Women need to know that the pain preceding a heart attack could be just about anywhere – the upper arms, shoulder, back, jaws, tooth, groin, head, adds Kataria. This, because the heart itself has no nerves but the outer membrane does and “when the heart is deprived of oxygen during an attack, these nerves send out signals to nerves elsewhere and the pain manifests itself in any of these areas.”
But the heart of the matter is that women respond worse to angioplasty and bypass, says Seth, probably due to their smaller arteries. Chandra adds that a woman generally has a more severe heart attack than a man, so it is more likely to be fatal.

Warts
Warts are small, benign (harmless) growths caused by a viral infection. They occur on the skin or the mucous membrane. The mucous membrane is tissue that lines the nose, throat, digestive tract, and other body openings. The viruses that cause warts are members of the human papilloma virus (HPV) family. Warts can be transmitted from one person to another and they can travel from one part of the body to another.
Warts occur most commonly among children, young adults, and women. They are a problem for 7 to 10 percent of the population. Warts are caused by nearly sixty different kinds of HPV. Each type prefers a certain part of the body. For example, some types of HPV produce warts on the skin, others cause warts inside the mouth, and still others produce warts on the genital and rectal areas.
Viruses enter the body through the skin or mucous membrane. They usually do not produce symptoms for one to eight months after entering the body. When warts appear, they are usually skin-colored and feel rough to the touch, but they can also be dark, flat, and smooth.
People differ in their sensitivity to HPV. Some individuals get warts over and over again. Others seldom or never get them. The virus is able to penetrate the body more easily if the skin has been damaged. For example, children who bite their nails may damage their skin in the process, which makes it easier for the virus to enter the body and cause warts. People with weakened immune systems are especially sensitive to HPV and wart infections.
The most common types of warts include:
Common hand warts
Foot warts
Flat warts
Genital warts
Hand Warts
Common hand warts grow around the nails, on the fingers, and on the backs of hands. They appear most often where the skin is broken.
Foot Warts
Foot warts are also called plantar warts. Plantar warts usually occur on the ball of the foot, the heel and the bottom of the toes. The skin in these areas is subject to weight, pressure, and irritation and has a tendency to crack or break open, providing an opening for the virus. Foot warts usually do not stick up above the skin.
People of all age groups can get plantar warts. But they are most common among adolescents between the ages of twelve and sixteen. The virus can be picked up in locker rooms, swimming pools, or by walking barefooted on dirty surfaces. People with diabetes mellitus (see diabetes mellitus entry) are very likely to develop plantar warts. The warts develop in areas where sores did not heal properly.
Flat Warts
Flat warts are smaller and smoother than other kinds of warts and tend to grow in large numbers. Although they can appear anywhere on the body, flat warts appear most often on the legs of women and the faces of children and young adult males.
Cryosurgery:
The use of liquid nitrogen for the purpose of removing diseased tissue.
Human papilloma virus (HPV):
A family of viruses that cause hand, foot, flat, and genital warts.
Genital Warts
Genital warts are a type of sexually transmitted disease (STD). A sexually transmitted disease (see sexually transmitted diseases entry) is a condition that is passed from one person to another during sexual activity. The forms of HPV that cause genital warts are very contagious. A person who has sexual contact with someone
infected with HPV is very likely to contract the disease. Experts estimate that two-thirds of these people will develop genital warts within three months of contact. As a result, about one million new cases of genital warts are diagnosed each year in the U S.

Finger pain
Finger pain: Introduction
Pain can arise from a variety of causes ranging from accidental trauma to nerve conditions. Pain-like sensations often described as pins-and-needles, prickling or burning sensations are called paresthesias; see finger paresthesias. All pain or pain-like sensations need prompt medical investigation.
Causes of Finger pain:
The following medical conditions are some of the possible causes of Finger pain. There are likely to be other possible causes, so ask your doctor about your symptoms.
Finger trauma
Broken finger
Subungal hematoma
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Ulnar nerve disorder
Knuckle disorder
Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Gout
Bone tumor
Raynaud's disease
Scleroderma
Vasculitis
Peripheral vascular disease
Embolism
Nail disorders
Paronychia
Tendon sheath infection
Pulp space infection
Cervical spondylosis.
Pain Referral
It may surprise you to learn that these abnormal sensations rarely originate in the fingers and hands but are almost always the effects of trigger points in muscles of the neck, chest, upper back, shoulders, upper arms, and forearms. This is called “referred pain.” Trigger points typically send their pain elsewhere.
Home Care:
Avoid activities that cause or aggravate pain.
After injury, rest the finger joints so that they can heal, but use mild stretching exercises to keep them limber and maintain motion. Stretch the joints gently, not forcefully, twice a day. Stretch just to the point of discomfort, but not enough to cause pain.
Use common sense in thinking of ways to perform activities that are less stressful to the joints. For example, a big handle can be gripped with less strain than a small handle.
Avoid strong pain medicines that tend to mask the pain and may lead to excessive activity or exercise.
Anti-inflammatory medication can help. Any prescribed medication for inflammation should be taken only as directed.

Food pyramid
The United States Department of Agriculture has created a guide for nutrition that is formally known as food guide pyramid. Published in 1992, this pyramid shows how much of each category of food should be consumed by an individual daily. The food guide pyramid replaced the classification of food groups. In 2005, the United States Department of Agriculture or USDA released a new successor of food pyramid known as MyPyramid.
A food pyramid arranges the food starting from the high calorie food at the top to the low calorie food at the base. The ideal food pyramid differs from person to person. There are different food pyramids for different person. The food pyramid for a diabetic patient will surely vary from the food pyramid of a heart patient and that goes the same with a pregnant woman and a normal person. In today’s world, the demand for food pyramids is gradually increasing, particularly in the corporate and software section where people could not follow a healthy routine due to their hectic work schedule. This lack of fixed routine has enhanced the demands of food pyramids.
With the recent emphasis on weight control, the demand for food pyramid has also increased. There has also been a recent change in the view that is responsible for the popularity of food pyramid. Earlier, it was believed that excess of fat is detrimental to health, but now the beliefs have changed.
Vegetarian Food Pyramid
Vegetarian Food Pyramid is a special type of food pyramid that is made to serve all the vegetarians. A well maintained Vegetarian Food Pyramid comprised of all the essential elements that are essential to meet the demands of an adult human body. A prescribed Vegetarian Food Pyramid should be full of nutritions as well as all the major components of food. To keep your physique fit and fine, you must have proper proportion of protein, fat, carbohydrate, minerals, water, salts and many more elements in your daily foods. But if you are a vegetarian, then you must have to be more careful about your diet as Vegetarian Food Pyramid has strictly maintain plant-based diet to fulfill the need of nutrition of your body. To fulfill your daily nutritional need, you have to follow the Vegetarian Food Pyramid.
Vegetarian Food Pyramid comprises of several plant based nutritious foods such as green vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, legumes and seed. To compensate the goodness of meat food sources, Vegetarian Food Pyramid also consists of protein based foods such as cereals, soybeans and many other foods. There should be more emphasis on the less fat food products in a Vegetarian Food Pyramid. Normally, cholesterol, fats are such kind foods that add more fiber in body.
There are three types of vegetarians in the world and they follow their own type of foods. So, Vegetarian Food Pyramid should also be different for each type of vegetarian. Let's know the details about the different types of vegetarians and their characteristics-
Vegans: These are the special type of vegetarian who do not have all the foods related to animals. They eliminate several foods such as poultry, meat, fish, eggs, cheese, milk and milk based products. Vegans only take plant-based foods.
Lacto-vegetarians: These type of vegetarians eat both milk and milk based products including plant-based food products. These people do not eat animal-based products such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs and other animal-based foods.
Lacto-ovo vegetarians: These type of vegetarians eat milk as well as milk based products, eggs, cheese, butter, yogurt but eliminate animal products such as fish, poultry products including poultry, and red meat.
So, there are three types of Vegetarian Food Pyramid to cater nutritious foods to all types of vegetarians. Here you can get a brief idea about a well planned vegetarian food pyramid-
A Vegetarian Food Pyramid consists of vegetables, oils, fats, sweets, and salt.
Low fat products, milk, fortified foods, fresh cheese, yogurt are also included.
Nut, Legume, seed and other meat alternative products are also included in Vegetarian Food Pyramid.
Vegetables are the integral part of a Vegetarian Food Pyramid.
Different types of fruits as well as fruit juices are also included in this pyramid.
Bread, pasta, cereal, rice, whole grain are also counted in a well described Vegetarian Food Pyramid.

Healthy eating
Whether you have a toddler or a teen, here are five of the best strategies to improve nutrition and encourage smart eating habits:
Have regular family meals.
Serve a variety of healthy foods and snacks.
Be a role model by eating healthy yourself.
Avoid battles over food.
Involve kids in the process.
But it's not easy when everyone is juggling busy schedules and convenience food, such as fast food, is so readily available.
Here are some ways to incorporate all five strategies into your routine.
Family Meals
Family meals are a comforting ritual for both parents and kids. Children like the predictability of family meals and parents get a chance to catch up with their kids. Kids who take part in regular family meals are also:
more likely to eat fruits, vegetables, and grains
less likely to snack on unhealthy foods
less likely to smoke, use marijuana, or drink alcohol
In addition, family meals offer the chance to introduce kids to new foods and to act as a role model for healthy eating.
Teens may turn up their noses at the prospect of a family meal — not surprising because they're busy and want to be more independent. Yet studies find that teens still want their parents' advice and counsel, so use mealtime as a chance to reconnect. Also, consider trying these strategies:
Allow your teen to invite a friend to dinner.
Involve your teen in meal planning and preparation.
Keep mealtime calm and congenial — no lectures or arguing.
What counts as a family meal? Any time you and your family eat together — whether it's takeout food or a home-cooked meal with all the trimmings. Strive for nutritious food and a time when everyone can be there. This may mean eating dinner a little later to accommodate a child who's at sports practice. It can also mean setting aside time on the weekends, such as Sunday brunch, when it may be more convenient to gather as a group.
Stocking Up on Healthy Foods
Kids, especially younger ones, will eat mostly what's available at home. That's why it's important to control the supply lines — the foods that you serve for meals and have on hand for snacks. Follow these basic guidelines:
Work fruits and vegetables into the daily routine, aiming for the goal of at least five servings a day. Be sure you serve fruit or vegetables at every meal.
Make it easy for kids to choose healthy snacks by keeping fruits and vegetables on hand and ready to eat. Other good snacks include low-fat yogurt, peanut butter and celery, or whole-grain crackers and cheese.
Serve lean meats and other good sources of protein, such as fish, eggs, beans, and nuts.
Choose whole-grain breads and cereals so kids get more fiber.
Limit fat intake by avoiding deep-fried foods and choosing healthier cooking methods, such as broiling, grilling, roasting, and steaming. Choose low-fat or nonfat dairy products.
Limit fast food and low-nutrient snacks, such as chips and candy. But don't completely ban favorite snacks from your home. Instead, make them "once-in-a-while" foods, so kids don't feel deprived.
Limit sugary drinks, such as soda and fruit-flavored drinks. Serve water and low-fat milk instead.
How to Be a Role Model
The best way for you to encourage healthy eating is to eat well yourself. Kids will follow the lead of the adults they see every day. By eating fruits and vegetables and not overindulging in the less nutritious stuff, you'll be sending the right message.
Another way to be a good role model is to serve appropriate portions and not overeat. Talk about your feelings of fullness, especially with younger children. You might say, "This is delicious, but I'm full, so I'm going to stop eating." Similarly, parents who are always dieting or complaining about their bodies may foster these same negative feelings in their kids. Try to keep a positive approach about food.
Don't Battle Over Food
It's easy for food to become a source of conflict. Well-intentioned parents might find themselves bargaining or bribing kids so they eat the healthy food in front of them. A better strategy is to give kids some control, but to also limit the kind of foods available at home.
Kids should decide if they're hungry, what they will eat from the foods served, and when they're full. Parents control which foods are available to the child, both at mealtime and between meals. Here are some guidelines to follow:
Establish a predictable schedule of meals and snacks. It's OK to choose not to eat when both parents and kids know when to expect the next meal or snack.
Don't force kids to clean their plates. Doing so teaches kids to override feelings of fullness.
Don't bribe or reward kids with food. Avoid using dessert as the prize for eating the meal.
Don't use food as a way of showing love. When you want to show love, give kids a hug, some of your time, or praise.
Get Kids Involved
Most kids will enjoy deciding what to make for dinner. Talk to them about making choices and planning a balanced meal. Some might even want to help shop for ingredients and prepare the meal. At the store, teach kids to check out food labels to begin understanding what to look for.
In the kitchen, select age-appropriate tasks so kids can play a part without getting injured or feeling overwhelmed. And at the end of the meal, don't forget to praise the chef.
School lunches can be another learning lesson for kids. More important, if you can get them thinking about what they eat for lunch, you might be able to help them make positive changes. Brainstorm about what kinds of foods they'd like for lunch or go to the grocery store to shop together for healthy, packable foods.
There's another important reason why kids should be involved: It can help prepare them to make good decisions on their own about the foods they want to eat. That's not to say they'll suddenly want a salad instead of french fries, but the mealtime habits you help create now can lead to a lifetime of healthier choices.Reviewed by: Mary L. Insomnia
Insomnia is such a common condition, affecting millions of Americans, yet many people are not aware of the serious consequences of Insomnia. Commonly referred to as sleeplessness, or lack of sleep, insomnia can lead to severe fatigue, anxiety, depression and lack of concentration. Insomnia is serious, although unlike other diseases it does not kill. But only a sleep deprived person knows how lonely and how terrible this state can be.
Sleeplessness, or Insomnia, is something of an epidemic in the US right now. The National Sleep Foundation says that 47 million American adults may be at risk of injury and physical and emotional difficulty because they do not get enough sleep. Recently, the National Institutes of Health estimated that 50 million to 70 million Americans of all ages suffer sleep-related problems.
All of us, at some time or the other, found ourselves wide-awake at night, when the whole world is sleeping. Even though we try desperately to sleep, it evades us, leaving us feeling tired, frustrated and drained out the next day. For most people this is a temporary phenomenon, triggered by some stress, anxiety or illness in our lives.
But there are many millions of people who go through this turmoil, night after night. These poor souls are just unable to fall asleep, try as hard as they might. Some do fall asleep for a few hours, only to get up frequently during the night. Restless sleep leaves them severely fatigued. These people are called insomniacs. Medical Insomnia is classed as not being able to sleep (or sleeping for less than 4 hours at a time) for 144 hours straight. Deliberately staying awake does not constitute insomnia.
What happens if you have insomnia?
If you have insomnia or trouble falling asleep, and have this condition for several weeks in a row then you are likely to suffer from one of the following conditions:
Extreme fatigue
Lack of concentration
Lethargy
Depression
Stress and anxiety.
A person can have primary or secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia is sleeplessness that is not attributable to a medical or environmental cause. Secondary insomnia means that a person is having sleep problems because of something else, such as a health condition, an example of which would be generalized anxiety disorder.
Some of the most common causes of insomnia are:
Sleep Apnea is a condition that occurs when a sleeping person's breathing is interrupted, thus interrupting the normal sleep cycle. With the obstructive form of the condition, some part of the sleeper's respiratory tract loses muscle tone and partially collapses. People with obstructive sleep apnea often do not remember any of this, but they complain of excessive sleepiness during the day. Central sleep apnea interrupts the normal breathing stimulus of the central nervous system, and the individual must actually wake up to resume breathing. This form of apnea is often related to a cerebral vascular condition, congestive heart failure, and premature aging.
Circadian rhythm sleep disorders cause insomnia at some times of the day and excessive sleepiness at other times of the day. Common circadian rhythm sleep disorders include jet lag and delayed sleep phase syndrome. Jet lag is seen in people who travel through multiple time zones, as the time relative to the rising and falling of the sun no longer coincides with the body's internal concept of it. The insomnia experienced by shift workers is also a circadian rhythm sleep disorder.
Parasomnia includes a number of disorders of arousal or disruptive sleep events including nightmares, sleepwalking, violent behavior while sleeping, and REM behavior disorder, in which a person moves his/her physical body in response to events within his/her dreams. These conditions can often be treated successfully through medical intervention or through the use of a sleep specialist.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease causes repeated awakenings during the night due to unpleasant sensations resulting from stomach acid flowing upward into the throat while asleep.
Mania or Hypomania in bipolar disorder can cause difficulty falling asleep. A person going through a manic or hypomanic episode may feel a reduced need for sleep. Sleep deprivation can worsen a manic episode, or cause hypomania to develop into mania.
Some simple and easy to do steps for curing insomnia
Many who have cured their insomnia have done so by reviewing and experimenting with many different cures. Often, a combination of dietary and lifestyle changes can prove to be the most helpful approach. As with many similar health problems, a determined, across-the-board holistic approach to sleeping problems is often advisable.
Cut down on Caffeine: Unlike popular perception, it is not just the nighttime cup of coffee that can leave you awake. Caffeine is present in several food things like tea, colas, and even some medications such as Anacin and Excedrin. Some people are very sensitive to Caffeine and even a little bit of caffeine can leave them awake for a long time. Some people take as many as 20 hours to flush the caffeine out of their system. So if you have chronic insomnia, it may be worthwhile to stay away from caffeine and see if it makes any difference.
Cut down on alcohol: Especially close to bedtime, is also bad for a good sleep. Although alcohol works like a sedative initially, it can wake you up at mid night (most often around 3.00 am) and leave you tired and groggy next day.
Stay away from large meals: Eat three to four hours before dinner time and preferable eat a light meal at nights. Too much food can make you sleepy but like alcohol can disturb with your sleep later in the night. Make sure that your dinner includes lots of carbohydrates as they stimulate the production of amino acid called tryptophan and other chemicals like serotonins, which have a calming and relaxing effect on our brains.
Foods that have this calming effect include warm milk, chicken, turkey, whole grain breads, cereals and banana. Stay away from fat and spicy food.
Stop smoking: The chemical found in cigarettes, Nicotine, raises blood pressure, heart rate and acts as a stimulant exciting the brain and the body. What you need before sleeping is to calm down and not excite your brain.
Check your medication: Some medicines, which you take regularly, may be leaving you sleepless. Check with your doctor who will prescribe other drugs. Check your medicine labels to see if it contains caffeine, which may be acting as a stimulant.
Do something about your sleep environment: Many people are very light sleepers and even the slightest sound can disrupt their sleep. If your mate snores then ask him to sleep on his side rather than on the back as this cuts down the snoring noise. If you cannot drown out the noise in your environment then try ear plus, or a humming fan or other white noises.

Stress
Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger – whether it’s real or imagined – the body's defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction, or the stress response.
The stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life – giving you extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident.
The stress response also helps you rise to meet challenges. Stress is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation at work, sharpens your concentration when you’re attempting the game-winning free throw, or drives you to study for an exam when you'd rather be watching TV.
But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing major damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life.
The Body’s Stress Response
When you perceive a threat, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rouse the body for emergency action.
Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, breath quickens, and your senses become sharper. These physical changes increase your strength and stamina, speed your reaction time, and enhance your focus – preparing you to either fight or flee from the danger at hand.
Effects of chronic stress
The body doesn’t distinguish between physical and psychological threats. When you’re stressed over a busy schedule, an argument with a friend, a traffic jam, or a mountain of bills, your body reacts just as strongly as if you were facing a life-or-death situation. If you have a lot of responsibilities and worries, your emergency stress response may be “on” most of the time. The more your body’s stress system is activated, the easier it is to trip and the harder it is to shut off.
Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.
Many health problems are caused or exacerbated by stress, including:
Pain of any kind
Heart disease
Digestive problems
Sleep problems
Depression
Obesity
Autoimmune diseases
Skin conditions, such as eczema.
How much stress is too much?
Because of the widespread damage stress can cause, it’s important to know your own limit. But just how much stress is “too much” differs from person to person. Some people roll with the punches, while others crumble at the slightest obstacle or frustration. Some people even seem to thrive on the excitement and challenge of a high-stress lifestyle.
Your ability to tolerate stress depends on many factors, including the quality of your relationships, your general outlook on life, your emotional intelligence, and genetics.
Things that influence your stress tolerance level.
Your support network – A strong network of supportive friends and family members is an enormous buffer against life’s stressors. On the flip side, the more lonely and isolated you are, the greater your vulnerability to stress.
Your sense of control – If you have confidence in yourself and your ability to influence events and persevere through challenges, it’s easier to take stress in stride. People who are vulnerable to stress tend to feel like things are out of their control.
Your attitude and outlook – Stress-hardy people have an optimistic attitude. They tend to embrace challenges, have a strong sense of humor, accept that change is a part of life, and believe in a higher power or purpose.
Your ability to deal with your emotions. You’re extremely vulnerable to stress if you don’t know how to calm and soothe yourself when you’re feeling sad, angry, or afraid. The ability to bring your emotions into balance helps you bounce back from adversity.
Your knowledge and preparation – The more you know about a stressful situation, including how long it will last and what to expect, the easier it is to cope. For example, if you go into surgery with a realistic picture of what to expect post-op, a painful recovery will be less traumatic than if you were expecting to bounce back immediately.

The situations and pressures that cause stress are known as stressors. We usually think of stressors as being negative, such as an exhausting work schedule or a rocky relationship.
However, anything that puts high demands on you or forces you to adjust can be stressful. This includes positive events such as getting married, buying a house, going to college, or receiving a promotion.
What causes stress depends, at least in part, on your perception of it. Something that's stressful to you may not faze someone else; they may even enjoy it.
For example, your morning commute may make you anxious and tense because you worry that traffic will make you late. Others, however, may find the trip relaxing because they allow more than enough time and enjoy listening to music while they drive.
Common external causes of stress
Not all stress is caused by external factors. Stress can also be self-generated:
Major life changes
Work
Relationship difficulties
Financial problems
Being too busy
Children and family
Common internal causes of stress
Not all stress is caused by external factors. Stress can also be self-generated:
Inability to accept uncertainty
Pessimism
Negative self-talk
Unrealistic expectations
Perfectionism
Lack of assertiveness
Signs and symptoms of stress overload
It’s important to learn how to recognize when your stress levels are out of control. The most dangerous thing about stress is how easily it can creep up on you. You get used to it. It starts to feels familiar – even normal. You don’t notice how much it’s affecting you, even as it takes a heavy toll.
The signs and symptoms of stress overload can be almost anything. Stress affects the mind, body, and behavior in many ways, and everyone experiences stress differently.
How do you respond to stress?
Psychologist Connie Lillas uses a driving analogy to describe the three most common ways people respond when they’re overwhelmed by stress:
Foot on the gas – An angry or agitated stress response. You’re heated, keyed up, overly emotional, and unable to sit still.
Foot on the brake – A withdrawn or depressed stress response. You shut down, space out, and show very little energy or emotion.
Foot on both – A tense and frozen stress response. You “freeze” under pressure and can’t do anything. You look paralyzed, but under the surface you’re extremely agitated.
The following table lists some of the common warning signs and symptoms of stress. The more signs and symptoms you notice in yourself, the closer you may be to stress overload.
Cognitive Symptoms
Memory problems
Inability to concentrate
Poor judgment
Seeing only the negative
Anxious or racing thoughts
Constant worrying
Emotional Symptoms
Moodiness
Irritability or short temper
Agitation, inability to relax
Feeling overwhelmed
Sense of loneliness and isolation
Depression or general unhappiness
Physical Symptoms
Aches and pains
Diarrhea or constipation
Nausea, dizziness
Chest pain, rapid heartbeat
Loss of sex drive
Frequent colds
Behavioral Symptoms
Eating more or less
Sleeping too much or too little
Isolating yourself from others
Procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities
Using alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax
Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing)
Dealing with stress and its symptoms
While unchecked stress is undeniably damaging, there are many things you can do to reduce its impact and cope with symptoms.
Learn how to manage stress
You may feel like the stress in your life is out of your control, but you can always control the way you respond. Managing stress is all about taking charge: taking charge of your thoughts, your emotions, your schedule, your environment, and the way you deal with problems. Stress management involves changing the stressful situation when you can, changing your reaction when you can’t, taking care of yourself, and making time for rest and relaxation.
Strengthen your relationships
A strong support network is your greatest protection against stress. When you have trusted friends and family members you know you can count on, life’s pressures don’t seem as overwhelming. So spend time with the people you love and don’t let your responsibilities keep you from having a social life. If you don’t have any close relationships, or your relationships are the source of your stress, make it a priority to build stronger and more satisfying connections.
Tips for reaching out and building relationships:
Help someone else by volunteering.
Have lunch or coffee with a co-worker.
Call or email an old friend.
Go for a walk with a workout buddy.
Schedule a weekly dinner date.
Learn how to relax
You can’t completely eliminate stress from your life, but you can control how much it affects you. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing activate the body’s relaxation response, a state of restfulness that is the opposite of the stress response. When practiced regularly, these activities lead to a reduction in your everyday stress levels and a boost in your feelings of joy and serenity. They also increase your ability to stay calm and collected under pressure.
Invest in your emotional health
Most people ignore their emotional health until there’s a problem. But just as it requires time and energy to build or maintain your physical health, so it is with your emotional well-being. The more you put in to it, the stronger it will be. People with good emotional health have an ability to bounce back from stress and adversity. This ability is called resilience. They remain focused, flexible, and positive in bad times as well as good. The good news is that there are many steps you can take to build your resilience and your overall emotional health.
